Thanks to Undercovers, the spy drama ending on M-Net Africa tonight, we’re now familiar with the name Gugu Mbatha-Raw, the British actress born to a South African father. She may have been a new face on African screens but for many TV viewers in the UK, she’s become a regular over the years as she’s developed her career.
Apart from her lead role alongside Boris Kodjoe in Undercovers , Gugu has also appeared in the Bonekickers, Doctor Who? and MI-5.
Gugu was nominated for a few awards for her role in the spy drama, including an NAACP Image Award. But apparently, due to low show ratings we won’t get to see Gugu as the sexy Mrs Bloom again, because a second season hasn’t been commissioned.
This hasn’t stopped her, Gugu’s star is rising higher in Hollywood as well, judging by the string of feature films to her name. What’s even more impressive is that in her first film role, she starred alongside the multi-talented Julia Roberts in a Tom Hanks directed movie, Larry Crowne.
In 2011 she was cast as a female lead in Tim Kring’s Touch, and she received a Black Reel Award nomination in the Best Breakthrough Performance category.
Luckily for us, it looks like we can expect a lot more from this beautiful actress. Watch the season finale of Undercovers S1 tonight at 20:30 E and 22:00 W on M-Net Africa to see where it all began for our Gugu.
